The Food Processing Environmental Assistance Center (FPEAC) is one of the Compliance Assistance Centers developed by industry-government partnerships, with support from US EPA's Office of Compliance and Enforcement.

FPEAC is housed at Purdue University in the Department of Food Science located in West Lafayette, IN. The FPEAC is directed by Dr. Kevin Keener with program management provided by Angie Honeywell. Assistant FPEAC Directors are Dr. Martin Okos and Dr. Mark Morgan. The FPEAC personnel will provide the expertise and knowledge to the web site, workshops, customized training and audits, and publications. The relationships to key individuals in the industry they have developed over the years will assist the FPEAC in support, marketing, and expertise.

The FPEAC staff has delivered over 70 workshops to national and international audiences on food processing, food safety, food regulations, and food plant sanitation programs in the past ten years. These programs have been joint efforts between multiple partners including state and federal regulatory agencies (USDA and FDA). A portion of these workshops have included information on waste management such as discharge limits (BOD, COD, pH, FOG, suspended solids, etc.), TMDL's, reporting requirements, Clean Air Act, and Best Available Control Technologies. Along with workshop materials, the assembled team has developed over 30 educational fact sheets and handouts on food processing, food safety, food plant sanitation, and food regulations.

An Advisory Board consisting of representatives from FPEAC, Industry, and Government will assist the FPEAC with the following activities:

  • Assist the FPEAC staff in determining the environmental needs that exist in the food processing industry
  • Prioritize development of FPEAC activities and programs
  • Provide technical information where available on current technologies and practices used in environmental management and compliance.
  • Provide assistance in reviewing created materials - fact sheets, educational trainings, website accessibility
  • Provide updates to association members on current offerings and programs available from FPEAC
